Dancing the Salsa in Miami

There are a few things that come to mind when you think of Miami: sun, fun, and for many, that beckoning beat of the salsa rhythms.

When you’re in the Magic City, or any other city for that matter, it’s always fun to immerse yourself in the local culture and what better way to enjoy Miami than by taking a salsa dance class.

It’s easy to feel the rhythm of the night at Salsa Mia Miami Beach where Sizzling Salsa Lessons take place every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 8:30 p.m.  Combine the dancing class with Cuban mojitos, music, and fun, and you’ve got a great night out on the town.  Each salsa class with instructors lasts two hours and costs $40. (501 Lincoln Road, SoBe)

Owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Bongos Cuban Cafe gets crowded in the late evening hours when the tables are cleared away to make room for hot Latin dancing.  A best bet is to make dinner reservations at the Cafe and enjoy the evening as it unfolds into late night salsa fun. (Two locations: 820 Ocean Drive in SoBe and 601 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami)

Salsa Lovers is a great place to have fun and take a group salsa dancing lesson that’s offered each weekday at 7:00 p.m.  You don’t need to bring a partner and you don’t need a reservation, just bring yourself and let go to the rhythmic salsa beat. (9848 SW 40th Street)

Salsa Kings is cited as the ‘only dance studio (in Miami) with World Salsa Federation certified instructors.’  Their intro package allows unlimited lessons in level one or three lessons at any level for only $20.  Classes take place on weekdays at 8:00 p.m. while registration begins at 7:30 p.m. and again on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. with registration at 4:30 p.m. (1600 SW 107th Ave)

Salsa Racing Dance Studios combines the unique movements of salsa with a fitness workout to become an evening of fun and exercise.  Group lessons are available on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:00 p.m. for beginners and 8:00 p.m. for intermediate and advanced classes; these weekday classes are held at Café Mystique 7250 NW 11 Street).

There’s also a few clubs that offer free salsa lessons including Alcazaba during ladies night every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. and Cafe Mystique on Thursday nights.
